One of the guys here to prepare for the Olympic games is Jim Van Someren, following in the footsteps of his brother who gained a medal in the previous Youth Olympic games. He said, “there are a lot of different conditions, every day something different, it is really hard.” His response to the question, “You have the know-how, you think you can do it?” was an emphatic “I hope so, yes!” Jim enjoyed the windy races on day one but he doesn’t mind the different conditions. His aim is to qualify his country first and then work on his personal qualification.
Giorgia Special, the 2017 Techno293 Plus World Champion from Quiberon France, is also in Buenos Aires preparing for her YOG goal. “Quiberon was the first step because we qualified the nation,” she said. “Here is the second step because in Buenos Aires I can test the conditions of the venue and I think it is a big opportunity to see the place of the Youth Olympic Games,” she added.
Today’s races involved working the sails hard until the wind got very light and shifty, meaning the end of racing for the day. Sailors returned to shore, many hitching a ride on the ribs. The media team declared themselves the winners of this harbour race!
