You can bet your house on the fact that anywhere in the world, from Argentina to Ukraine, from Hong Kong to America, in any of the other 35 countries than here in Spain, from where the 369 competitors have come for this 2019 Techno 293 World Championships, there will have been blue skies and 15 knots of steady breeze blowing, rather than the unfeasible 3 knots of wind that have frustrated today’s opening day. No races raced and no points on the board, but as the old sailing truth goes – when you schedule a regatta, you can be sure that this will be the week with no wind. It was a bit of a let-down after yesterday’s magnificent opening ceremony, and with a positive forecast for the opening day. But the overcast skies kept the sun away and the wind never got above 5 knots, making serious racing impossible despite everyone’s best intentions and efforts. The two Race Committees sent the fleets out to try and get something going, but there was nothing doing and in the end everyone was brought back to the beach to talk about what might have been. 
The good news is that there are still five days of competition left for the committees and fleets to get to the 12-races target, so today’s unsuccessful day may not matter. The bad news is that the forecast for tomorrow is even worse. But if it’s as accurate as today’s forecast we could be racing under bright sun tomorrow all the same. 
Obviously, all the competitors will be eager to get out of the starting blocks if there’s the slightest sniff of a breeze.
