After the first three races of the Techno 293 North American Junior Windsurfing Championships, there is a tight race to see which countries will qualify for the IOC Youth Olympics this summer in Singapore. [more]Thirty sailors (under age 17) are lining up to try to qualify the top two countries from North America (which includes Mexico, Guatamala, and all the Caribean nations) in both youth mens and womens divisions. Mexico’s Ignacio Berenguer Lleonart leads in the Junior Men’s, followed by Alejandro Monllor from Puerto Rico and USA’s 2007 Opti National Champion, Ian Stokes.
Audree Caron, from Canada, is the leading qualifier in the youth women’s. Marion Lepert (USA), although leading the girls championship, is unable to represent her adopted country under IOC Nationality rules.
North American titles will also be presented in the Under 15 age category, with Luke Muller (USA) and Charlotte Samson (USA) currently leading.
The U.S. Olympic Sailing Committee has announced that the top U.S. sailor that qualifies the country in men’s or women’s will be the United States representative to the Youth Olympics, Singapore, in August.
